framing the barn

since I can remember Bob and I have talked about living by a lake, having a small house and big barn for playing in. it's kind of blowing my mind that we're doing all of those things right now. just a little over a year ago, March 2023, we were selling our house to fund this barn dream. and happy birthday to me...they started framing out our barn two days before my birthday, August 2024.

dramatic shift with the framing

we live less than 1/4 mile away from our property where the barn is being built. so every day we go over and check on the progress. going from a blank field to the skeleton of a barn was a dramatic shift that was so exciting to see. there's three guys building the barn and the framing was done in about four to five days.

I don't know if we really said much during this phase except - "whoa, it's finally happening". when the posts were going up, somehow the barn felt kind of small. then as the perlins [horizontal boards connecting the posts] were added it flipped to feeling really big. even our builder mentioned how funny it is that the feeling can change so much through out the build process.

overhead doors on the barn

my favorite part of these five days was when the overhead doors were framed out. that gave me a great visual of how tall the barn was going to be and got me excited of how we were going to use our space. it made it feel that much more real.

truly the doors are what determined the height of our barn. I googled 'height of pontoon on trailer' [manifesting a boat in our future one day] and saw we needed a 14' foot door. in order to install a 14' door our barn would need to be 16' floor to trusses.

birds eye layout

we will have two 14' doors, one on the north side which is the front and one on the east side, just a little shy of center of the barn. this layout will allow us to pull trailers and things thru without having to worry about backing out and allow us to utilize our space most efficiently.

the most fun overhead door is the one on the west side connecting the lean-to patio area to the barn. this is a 10' wide, 8' tall door. there's just something about hanging out in an open air patio and walking inside a building without having to use a door that makes me so happy. anytime we can go to a bar or restaurant with this setup, I'm in, I just love it. I'm beyond pumped to have this experience in our own backyard.

next phase is installing the trusses and laying the metal roof...all black everything.
