we knew the decision to live with 1,800 less square foot plus letting go of a full basement and a three car garage was going to require us to downsize our things, but we were unaware of just how much that was in reality. it basically didn't happen.
with this life change of small living we knew we'd have to do it in a few phases. it was too big of a change for either of us to do in one step. we chatted about it at our morning meeting and decided phase one was getting a storage unit and we got the biggest one we could find.
we thought we lived pretty simply and didn't have a lot of extra stuff. we also thought we got rid of a lot of our things as we prepped the house to put it on the market. but as we hauled three small enclosed trailers and drove a twenty foot uhaul we started to wonder what we got rid of. I can tell you it wasn't the plants.
I wish I had a video of Bob processing what we were actually doing because it was hilarious. me and a friend were stacking boxes in the new house as bob was unloading them from the trailer. then he takes a step in the house with all the boxes crammed in and says, in the most matter of fact tone "oh wow. oh wow." he turns and looks in the other room and says "oh wow." and then peeks in the sun room and says "oh wow...this is literally just hitting me, right now, what we are doing." priceless.
so we have handed over our Cincinnati house and officially landed in our new home in Brooklyn, MI. we are so thankful for the help we got during our move from friends. and even more grateful for all of the love and support we got. our friends are the best.
I was so focused on what we had to get done to move that the emotions weren't really sinking in. once I got on the freeway though...I balled for about fifteen minutes. there are some really special people in Cincinnati I'm going to miss seeing whenever I wanted. it's the closing of one chapter of our adventure and turning to a blank page to start the next. it's going to be great and exactly what we want for our lives and it's really hard, mentally draining and emotionally exhausting. and I wouldn't change it from where I'm sitting.
there's lots of unpacking, organizing and nesting ahead. organizing is my jam so I'm pretty pumped about it. we will also be getting our bed in the loft and hopefully starting on these closets sooner than later. turns out the downsizing process has only just begun.
