in our years together Bob and I have always found so much fun in doing little projects together. well maybe not exactly together, more in parallel. when we first started dating Bob would go fishing and I'd join by working on my knitting project under a tree. when we moved in together I would create in our flowerbeds and Bob would maintain the yard.
when we moved to our Cincinnati house, that big garage gave us so much room for activities. Bob would fix chainsaws + small engines while I gave life to an old piece of furniture. I would work on my Switch Stitch creations while Bob would tidy up the garage. no matter what we were into one of the best parts was having our neighbors and friends stop and chat as they were walking by.
so much room for activities
so when we started day dreaming about downsizing the biggest motivating factor was to be able to upsize our play area. enter the barn of our dreams. knowing that the theme has been playin' and hangin' outside or in the garage we decided on the biggest open space we could imagine.
the best part about day dreams is there are no limits, no rules. and that's my favorite place to be.
but what about winter time? well, as we looked back, history proved that we'd still hang in the garage a bit but with a lot more time in the kitchen blended in. what if we put a kitchen in our barn?!
a kitchen in the barn
the times that I could get Bob to imagine his dream kitchen I made sure to take good notes and of course there was a lot of Pinterest scrolling for me. I took my Bob notes and my Pinterest finds and called up Bre to put all of our wants together for a finished look. when it was time to tell our builder the basics of what we wanted we were more than ready on the hang out spot.
Bob's want for his dream barn, kitchen, hang out:
a big tv
a big island
a dishwasher
a place to play cards
air conditioning
my wants:
a big island
tons of cooking and countertop space
a look + feel that's so opposite of a regular barn
an ultra functional layout with tons of storage
a cute little bar area nook
a spot for a future market area if I want
bre saves the day [and my brain] again
having Bre create these renderings saved so much time, thinking and frustration. Bob and I can have conversations a lot easier about the decisions we need to make because we're looking + talking about the same thing.
we decided we might not finishing the hang out spot right away [still looking for that money tree] but being able to see the full finished plan is going to be so helpful in a lot of ways. since we are getting heated concrete floors we will need to have the plumbing installed before the floors are done. we also need to know the finished plan so we can pick the best placement of the windows and doors. and those need to be ordered at the very start because they'll take a bit of time to arrive.
we have a solid plan and a great visual of what we want for our hang out area and we feel really good about it. thanks Bre. and just as our driveway turned out to be a bit different than what we thought we wanted, we are excited to see what this finished space turns out to be. up next is framing out the barn to literally watch our dreams be built.
